Paul Theodis Gipson (March 21, 1946 – January 16, 1985) was a professional American football player. He played as a running back for four seasons. Paul played for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, and New England Patriots.

Paul Gipson's Football Journey

Paul Gipson played high school football at Conroe Washington. This was an all-black school at the time. He was a running back and fullback. He continued playing at the University of Houston. Paul was one of the first black athletes recruited by "UH."

College Star

In his senior year, Paul was recognized as a top player. He was a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association. He also earned second-team All-American honors from the Associated Press. Paul set several school rushing records during his time at Houston. He ran for 2,769 yards on 447 carries. This was an amazing average of 6.2 yards per carry. Many people consider him one of the greatest athletes in the history of the University of Houston.

Professional Career

The Atlanta Falcons picked Paul in the 1969 NFL Draft. He was a second-round pick, the 29th player chosen overall. In 1971, he was traded to the Detroit Lions. Then, in 1973, he moved from Detroit to the New England Patriots.

In 1974, Paul also played in the World Football League. He was with the Shreveport Steamer team. He wore jersey number 0 during his time there. Paul often returned to visit the Houston Cougars football team. He would watch their practice sessions and talk with the coaches.

Paul Gipson passed away on January 16, 1985. He was 38 years old. He died from a heart attack. Funeral services were held in Conroe, Texas. He was buried at Golden Gate Cemetery.

University of Houston Records

Paul Gipson set many impressive records while playing for the University of Houston. He held the record for the most rushing yards gained in a career. He also set the record for most rushing yards in a single season in 1968. Paul had an incredible game against Tulsa in 1968, where he gained 282 rushing yards. This was a school record for many years. He also held records for the most games with 200 or more rushing yards. Paul was known for his many carries in a season and in individual games. He also set a record for the most rushing touchdowns in a season with 13 in 1968. His career total of 25 rushing touchdowns was also a record. These records show how important he was to the Houston Cougars football team.
