Paul Girvan, born on July 6, 1963, is a politician from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He recently retired from politics. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for South Antrim from 2017 to 2024. In this role, he was the DUP's spokesperson for Transport.
Before becoming an MP, he was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for South Antrim. He served as an MLA from 2003 to 2007, and again from 2010 to 2017.

Paul Girvan's Political Journey
Starting in Local Government
Paul Girvan began his political career in local government. He was first elected to the Newtownabbey Borough Council in 1997. He represented the Ballyclare area.
He was re-elected to the council several times. This happened in 2001, 2005, and 2011. From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Mayor of Newtownabbey. He also led the council's Development Committee.
Serving in the Northern Ireland Assembly
In 2003, Paul Girvan was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly. He represented the South Antrim area. He served in the Assembly until 2007.
He returned to the Assembly in 2010. This happened when William McCrea resigned. Paul Girvan continued to serve as an MLA until 2017.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In the 2017 general election, Paul Girvan ran for a seat in the UK Parliament. He won the election for the South Antrim area. He defeated the sitting MP, Danny Kinahan.
He kept his seat in the 2019 general election. His majority was 2,689 votes. In 2020, during a debate, he made a comment that he later apologized for.
In the 2024 general election, Paul Girvan lost his seat. Robin Swann of the Ulster Unionist Party won the election. After this, Paul Girvan announced his retirement from politics.
