Paul C. Jerrard (born April 20, 1965 – died February 15, 2023) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played as a defenceman and even played five games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Minnesota North Stars.
After his playing career, Paul Jerrard became a hockey coach. He was an assistant coach for many teams, including the Omaha Mavericks college team. He also coached in the AHL and the NHL for teams like the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames.
Playing Hockey
Paul Jerrard started his hockey journey at a famous Canadian hockey school called Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan. In 1983, when he was 18, the New York Rangers picked him in the 9th round of the 1983 NHL Draft.
After being drafted, Paul went to Lake Superior State University to play college hockey. He played for the Lake Superior State Lakers for all four years of his college life.
After college, he joined the Colorado Rangers in the IHL. In 1988, he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars. He played five games for them during the 1988-89 NHL season. Even though his time in the NHL was short, he continued to play in minor leagues until 1997, finishing his playing career with the Hershey Bears.
Coaching Hockey
Paul Jerrard began his coaching career in 1998 with the Lowell Lock Monsters in the AHL. After one season, he went back to his old college, Lake Superior State University, to coach their hockey team. He stayed there for four seasons.
Later, he joined the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach. The next year, he moved to the Hershey Bears, where he coached for two years. In 2009, he joined the Dallas Stars organization to coach their new minor league team, the Texas Stars. He worked with head coach Glen Gulutzan there.
When Glen Gulutzan became the head coach of the Dallas Stars, he brought Paul Jerrard with him. However, both coaches were let go from the Dallas Stars in 2013.
In August 2013, Paul Jerrard was hired by the Vancouver Canucks to be an assistant coach for their AHL team, the Utica Comets.
On July 6, 2016, he became an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames. His main job was to help the team's defense players get better and improve their penalty kill (a special play in hockey). He was fired from the Flames in April 2018, along with the head coach and another assistant coach.
Paul Jerrard then took an assistant coaching job with the Omaha Mavericks college team in May 2018. He coached there until his death.
