Paul Heinrich Gerhard Möhring (also known as Paul Mohr) was a German scientist. He was born on July 21, 1710, in Jever and passed away on October 28, 1792. Möhring was a physician (a doctor), a botanist (someone who studies plants), and a zoologist (someone who studies animals).

Early Life and Career

Paul Möhring studied medicine in two cities: Danzig and Wittenberg. After he graduated in 1733, he became a general practitioner (a family doctor) in his hometown of Jever. He even worked as a doctor for the Prince of Anhalt.

Classifying Birds: Avium Genera

In 1752, Möhring published a very important book called Avium Genera. This book was one of the first attempts to classify different bird species. He divided birds into four main groups. His work showed the early ideas of how scientists would later group animals in a modern way.

Connections with Famous Scientists

Throughout his long career, Paul Möhring wrote letters to many other famous scientists. These included Albrecht von Haller, Lorenz Heister, Carl Linnaeus, Hans Sloane, and Paul Gottlieb Werlhof. Carl Linnaeus, a very famous botanist, even named a plant genus Moehringia after him. This plant belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family.
