Paul Gottlieb Werlhof (born March 24, 1699 – died July 26, 1767) was a German physician (doctor) and poet. He was born in Helmstedt.

Early Life and Education

Paul Gottlieb Werlhof studied medicine at the University of Helmstedt. His teachers were famous doctors like Lorenz Heister and Brandanus Meibom. Brandanus Meibom was the son of another well-known doctor, Heinrich Meibom.

After finishing his studies, Werlhof worked as a doctor in a town called Peine for four years. In 1725, he moved to Hannover. There, he became one of the most important doctors in Europe. In 1740, he was named Königlicher Leibarzt, which means he became the personal doctor to the Hannover royalty. Werlhof stayed in Hannover until he passed away in 1767.

A Famous Doctor and Poet

In 1735, Werlhof gave a name to a certain bleeding problem. He called it "morbus haemorrhagicus maculosus." Today, this condition is known as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). It is a disorder where a person's blood doesn't clot properly.

Besides being a respected doctor, Werlhof was also a very good poet. He was a close friend of Albrecht von Haller, who was an anatomist (someone who studies the body's structure) and also a talented poet. Werlhof wrote his poems and hymns in German. However, his medical books were written in Latin.

His Writings

Paul Gottlieb Werlhof wrote several important works. One of his medical books, published in 1732, was about fevers. It was called Observationes de febribus. He also published a collection of his poems, titled Gedichte.
