Paul Stanford Thompson (born May 25, 1961) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a shooting guard and small forward. Paul Thompson was known for his skills on the court during his career, which included playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Early Life and College Basketball
Paul Thompson was born in Smyrna, Tennessee. He went to Peabody Magnet High School in Alexandria, Louisiana. After high school, he played college basketball for Tulane University from 1979 to 1983.
During his time at Tulane, Paul was a standout player. He was named the Metro Conference Freshman of the Year in 1980. He also earned a spot on the First-team All-Metro Conference twice, in 1981 and 1983. In 1982, he was named to the Second-team All-Metro Conference. Over his college career, he averaged about 16.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
Playing in the NBA
Paul Thompson was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the third round of the 1983 NBA draft. He was the 50th player picked overall. He played for the Cavaliers from 1983 to 1985.
In 1985, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Later that same year, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers after leaving the Bucks. In the NBA, Paul played a total of 154 regular season games. He averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
Playing Basketball Overseas
After his time in the NBA, Paul Thompson continued his professional basketball career overseas. He played for several teams in different countries.
- From 1985 to 1986, he played for the La Crosse Catbirds.
- In 1986 and 1987, he played for CSP Limoges in France.
- From 1987 to 1989, he played for Nashua Den Bosch in the Netherlands.
- In 1989 and 1990, he was part of FC Barcelona Bàsquet in Spain.
- From 1990 to 1992, he played for B. Sardegna Sassari in Italy.
- From 1992 to 1995, he played for Bnei HaSharon in Israel.
- From 1996 to 1998, he played for Maccabi Ra'anana, also in Israel.
- He finished his career playing for Ironi Ramat Gan in Israel from 1998 to 1999.
