Starting a New Geography Journal

Vidal de La Blache helped create the French school of geography. He also started an important academic journal called Annales de Géographie in 1893, along with Marcel Dubois and Lucien Gallois. He was the editor of this journal until he passed away. The Annales de Géographie became very important. It helped spread the idea that human geography is about studying people and how they interact with their environment.

One of his students, Albert Demangeon, was greatly influenced by Vidal de La Blache. Demangeon became a leading expert in human geography in France. During World War I, Vidal de La Blache and other geographers helped the army by being part of the Geographical Commission.

What Did He Study?

Vidal de La Blache wrote many books and articles. Some of his most famous works include Tableau de la Géographie de la France (1903) and Principles of Human Geography (1918).

Understanding Places and People

His book Tableau de la Géographie de la France was a big summary of his ideas. He looked at the whole country, studying everything from human activities to geology, transportation, and history. He was one of the first to connect all these different areas.

Vidal de La Blache was influenced by German thinkers like Friedrich Ratzel. He is linked to an idea called "possibilism". This idea suggests that while the environment offers possibilities, people have the freedom to choose how they live and develop their societies. It was different from "environmental determinism", which said that nature completely decides how people live.

Ideas About Regions

In 1910, Vidal de La Blache wrote an important article about the regions of France. He suggested dividing France into regions, each centered around a main city. He believed that in the modern world, with global competition and faster communication, it was better to have less centralized ways of organizing the country.

His geography focused on using maps and studying specific places in detail. He also used several key ideas like "landscapes," "settings," "regions," "lifeways" (genres de vie), and "density." Many of his students wrote about specific regions, looking at both their physical features and how people lived there.

Why Was His Work Important?

Vidal de La Blache's ideas had a huge impact on geography in France for many years. His way of looking at the world, which combined physical and human aspects of geography, became the main way geography was taught and studied.

His work helped shape how geographers understood the relationship between people and their environment. Even though geography changed a lot after his time, his ideas laid the foundation for future studies. He helped make geography a respected field of study that looked closely at how societies interact with the places they live in.
