Early Life and Family

Paula Jaraquemada was born in Santiago, Chile, on June 18, 1768. Her parents were Domingo de Jaraquemada and Cecilia de Alguizar. She was also related to the famous Carrera family, who were important figures in Chile's history.

A Heroic Act of Bravery

Helping the Patriot Army

Towards the end of the Chilean War of Independence, Paula Jaraquemada was about 50 years old. After a tough battle called the Second Battle of Cancha Rayada on March 19, 1818, the Chilean Patriot Army was defeated. Paula opened her large farm, known as a hacienda, in Paine to them. She gave the soldiers a safe place to hide and rest. She also protected them from the Spanish soldiers who were looking for them.

Providing Support for Soldiers

Paula did more than just offer shelter. She gave the soldiers supplies and helped them get back on their feet. She provided horses for the army. She even told her own workers to join the Patriot Army to help the cause.

Facing a Spanish Captain

One of Paula's most famous acts of courage happened when a Spanish captain arrived at her hacienda. He demanded the keys to her storeroom. He wanted to take supplies for his own troops. But Paula bravely refused. She told him, "I won't ever give you the keys. Nobody, except me, gives the commands in this house."

The captain ignored her and ordered her again to hand over the keys. Paula did not give up. She risked her life by taking a bayonet (a knife attached to a rifle) from one of the Spanish soldiers. She held it to her own chest. She declared that she would rather die than obey his order. This brave act showed her incredible strength and determination.

A Symbol of Chilean Courage

Paula Jaraquemada is remembered as a symbol of a strong Chilean woman. She stood up against authority and injustice. People often compare her bravery to other famous Chilean women like Inés Suárez and Javiera Carrera. Even today, she is seen as a role model for people who protest against unfair treatment.

Life After the War

In her later years, Paula Jaraquemada dedicated her time to helping others. She did a lot of charitable work. She visited orphans and people who did not have homes. She also worked to improve conditions for women held in the correctional house in Santiago.

Honoring Her Legacy

Many places in Chile are named after Paula Jaraquemada to honor her bravery and contributions.

  • In El Bosque, a kindergarten and a street are named after her.
  • In Santiago, a hospital that is now called "Hospital San Borja Arriarán" was originally named "Hospital Paula Jaraquemada."
  • Many schools across Chile also bear her name. You can find schools named after her in places like Quilicura, Paine, Recoleta, Iquique, and Peñalolen.
