Joen Pauli Højgaard Ellefsen (born April 20, 1936 – died August 24, 2012) was an important politician from the Faroe Islands. He was a member of the Union Party. Pauli Ellefsen served as the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 1981 to 1985.

Who Was Pauli Ellefsen?

Pauli Ellefsen was born in Miðvágur, a village in the Faroe Islands. He was the oldest of eight children. His parents were Sofia Højgaard and Joen Elias Ellefsen. Pauli had a brother, Svend Aage Ellefsen, who also became a politician. He was married to Henni Egholm. They lived together in Hoyvík, which is close to the capital city, Tórshavn.

Early Life and Education

Before becoming a politician, Pauli Ellefsen had many different jobs. From 1954 to 1956, he worked as a fisherman. After that, he became a telecommunications technician. He also went to a business school in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.

Starting His Career

In 1969, Pauli Ellefsen became a government surveyor. He lived in Denmark for a few years while studying and working. In the early 1970s, he moved back to the Faroe Islands with his family. He worked as an accountant with Jógvan Sundstein, who later also became Prime Minister. In 1975, Pauli Ellefsen started his own accounting business.

Pauli Ellefsen's Political Journey

Pauli Ellefsen began his political career in 1974. That year, he was first elected to the Løgting. The Løgting is the parliament, or main law-making body, of the Faroe Islands.

Leading the Union Party

From 1974 to 1990, Pauli Ellefsen was the leader of the Union Party. This party believes in keeping a strong connection between the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

Serving in Denmark and the Nordic Council

Pauli Ellefsen also represented the Faroe Islands in the Danish parliament, called the Folketing. He was one of two Faroese members there from 1977 to 1987 and again from 1988 to 1990. He also represented the Faroe Islands in the Nordic Council in 1975-1976 and in 1979. The Nordic Council is a group that helps countries in the Nordic region work together.

Becoming Prime Minister

In 1981, Pauli Ellefsen became the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. He held this important position until 1985. As Prime Minister, he was the head of the government.

Special Recognition

On May 7, 1984, Pauli Ellefsen received a special award. He was given the Order of the Dannebrog, Knight 1st Class. This is an honor given by the Danish royal family.
