Paulo Rodrigues started his football journey in his hometown of Uberaba, Brazil. He joined the youth team of Nacional. As he grew older, he played for a few different clubs. These included América-MG and Botafogo-SP.
Becoming a Champion with Bahia
In 1988, Paulo Rodrigues became very well-known in Brazilian football. He was a key player for Bahia, a team that won the top Brazilian championship, the Campeonato Brasileiro. He played alongside another famous player, Bobô. That same season, Paulo Rodrigues won a special award called the Silver Ball. This award is given to the best players in the Brazilian league.
Playing in Japan with Verdy Kawasaki
In September 1993, Paulo Rodrigues moved to Japan. He joined Verdy Kawasaki, a club in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league. Even though he didn't play much in his first season, his team, Verdy Kawasaki, won the J.League championship in 1993.
In March 1994, he played his first game for the team as a defender. He played three matches that month. However, he didn't play any more games after April and left the club in July 1994.
