Paulinho's Early Music Career
Paulinho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on September 6, 1952.
In the early 1970s, Paulinho started his music journey. He was a singer and played percussion for a dance band in Rio called Los Panchos Villa. In this band, he worked with Kiko and Feghali, who would later become his bandmates in Roupa Nova. In 1974, he was invited to join another popular band called Os Famks. Soon after joining, he asked Kiko to join the band as a guitarist.
Being Part of Roupa Nova
Paulinho had a very strong and memorable voice. He was the main singer for many popular songs by the Roupa Nova group. Some of their big hits included "Canção de Verão", "Clarear", "Volta pra Mim", and "Linda Demais". He also sang on newer songs like "À Flor da Pele" and "A Lenda".
Besides singing, Paulinho was also the percussionist for Roupa Nova. This meant he played instruments like drums and shakers that create rhythm. With Roupa Nova, Paulinho sang with many famous musicians from Brazil and other countries. These included The Commodores, Ivete Sangalo, and Zélia Duncan.
In 2009, Paulinho had some health issues and missed a few shows. Another singer, Maurício Gasperini, filled in for him. But Paulinho quickly got better and returned to the band. He was with Roupa Nova for over 40 years, right from when the group first started.
In 2009, Paulinho and Roupa Nova won a very important music award called the Latin Grammy. They won for the best contemporary Brazilian pop album. This was a huge honor, as they competed against other big names in music like Rita Lee and Ivete Sangalo.
Paulinho's Family Life
Paulinho was a father to two children who also became musicians. His son, Pepê, is a drummer for the band Jamz. This band became well-known on a TV show called Super Star.
Paulinho's daughter, Twigg, is also a singer. She even recorded a song called "O Barquinho" with Roupa Nova. This song was part of an album celebrating the band's 35 years in music.
Health Challenges and Passing Away
In August 2020, Paulinho was diagnosed with a type of cancer called lymphoma. In September, he had a special treatment called a bone marrow transplant. This procedure uses the patient's own stem cells to help them recover.
In November 2020, Paulinho caught COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. His health got much worse in the weeks that followed. He was admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Sadly, Paulinho passed away on December 14, 2020. His funeral was a private event for his family, and his body was cremated.
