Ivete Sangalo (born May 27, 1972) is a famous Brazilian singer, actress, and TV star. People often call her the "Queen of Brazil." She is known for her strong voice, amazing stage presence, and lively concerts. Her music is also very popular in Portugal.

Ivete first became famous in the mid-1990s as the lead singer of the axé music band, Banda Eva. They sold over 5 million albums! In 1999, she started her solo career. Her first album, Ivete Sangalo, was a big hit.

Some of her most popular songs include "Se Eu Não Te Amasse Tanto Assim," "Festa," and "Sorte Grande." In 2024, her song "Macetando" became number one on Spotify Brazil. This made her the first Brazilian artist from the 90s to reach the top of that chart.

In 2007, Ivete released Multishow ao Vivo: Ivete no Maracanã. This live concert video became one of the best-selling music videos worldwide. Her "Tour Madison" (2011–2012) is the highest-earning tour ever for a Brazilian female artist. Throughout her career, Ivete Sangalo has sold over 20 million albums. She has also won 4 Latin Grammy Awards, making her one of the top-selling female artists in Latin music.

Life and career

Early beginnings and solo start

Ivete Sangalo was born in Juazeiro, a city in Bahia, Brazil. She spent her childhood there. Her grandfather was from Spain.

She started singing at school events and then performed in bars. Soon, people noticed her talent, and she signed with Sony Music. In 1993, she became the lead singer of the Axé group Banda Eva. Their live album, Banda Eva Ao Vivo, sold over a million copies.

In 1997, Ivete decided to start her solo career. Her first album came out in 1999. It was full of upbeat Bahian rhythms and axé music. The album quickly became a gold and platinum certification hit. The next year, she released Beat Beleza, which also went platinum.

In 2000, her album Festa was released. The song "Festa" was a huge success and became the most popular song in Brazil in 2001. Its music video even featured 20 famous Brazilian celebrities! In 2002, she released Se Eu Não te Amasse Tanto Assim. This album included a song with American singer Brian McKnight. Her 2003 album, Clube Carnavalesco Innocentes Em Progresso, also earned a gold certification.

Becoming a superstar

In 2004, Ivete released MTV Ao Vivo: Ivete Sangalo. This live album featured her biggest hits and some songs from her time with Banda Eva. The album sold incredibly well, especially because of the song "Sorte Grande." Fans loved it so much they renamed it "Poeira." This song became a huge hit at parties, on the radio, and even at soccer stadiums. It was also featured in the Fifa 2005 video game.

The album was certified diamond, meaning it sold over 1 million copies. It was the second best-selling album in Brazil in 2004. The DVD of the concert, filmed at the Fonte Nova stadium, sold over 600,000 copies. It became the best-selling music DVD in Brazil ever!

In 2005, Billboard magazine called Ivete Sangalo "Brazil's Queen of Song." She was compared to Carmen Miranda, a famous Brazilian artist from the past. Ivete said she wanted to follow in the footsteps of respected Brazilian artists like Tom Jobim and Caetano Veloso. She hoped her unique music style would be recognized worldwide.

Her 2005 album, As Supernovas, quickly received triple platinum certification. This album had a different feel, with some songs inspired by the 1970s. It included a popular cover of Gilberto Gil's "Soy Loco por ti America," which became the theme song for the TV show América. Another song, "Quando a Chuva Passar," was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. This was special because it's rare for a non-Spanish-speaking singer to get such a nomination. As Supernovas also earned a diamond certification, confirming her as Brazil's biggest female solo singer.

Because of her many TV appearances, TV Globo, Brazil's largest TV station, invited her to host the show Estação Globo.

On December 16, 2006, Ivete performed at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro. This stadium has hosted concerts by global stars like Paul McCartney and Madonna. Ivete was the first Brazilian artist to perform there since 2002. The concert was released as a DVD in May 2007.

Ivete Sangalo has sold over 7 million CDs and more than 1.5 million DVDs. She is one of the highest-paid artists in Brazil. She also has many sponsorship deals with big companies like Grendene, Danone, and Panasonic.

In October 2008, she released a children's album called A Casa Amarela with Saulo Fernandes.

It included popular songs like "Cadê Dalila" and "Na Base do Beijo," both of which reached number one on Brazilian charts. "Agora Eu Já Sei" was also a big romantic hit.

In September 2010, Ivete confirmed that she had quietly married nutritionist Daniel Cady, the father of her son Marcelo.

On September 11, Ivete joined the Dave Matthews Band on stage in Dallas, Texas. They performed a Portuguese-English version of the song "You And Me." This performance was also included on her live DVD.
