Life and Music Career
Early Days and Rise to Fame
Ivete Sangalo was born in Juazeiro, a city in Bahia, Brazil. She spent her childhood there. She started singing at school events and then performed in bars. People quickly noticed her talent, and she signed with Sony Music.
In 1993, Sony decided to restart the Axé music group Banda Eva. Ivete was chosen to be their lead singer. Their live album, Banda Eva Ao Vivo, was a huge success, selling over a million copies.
Solo Career Begins
In 1997, Ivete decided to start her solo career. In 1999, she released her first solo album. This album was full of upbeat Bahian rhythms and axé music. It quickly earned gold and platinum certification for its sales. The next year, she released Beat Beleza, which also sold very well and became a platinum album.
In 2000, Ivete released the album Festa. The main song, "Festa," was a massive hit. It was so popular that it became the most played song in Brazil in 2001. Its music video even featured 20 famous Brazilian celebrities!
In 2002, she released Se Eu Não te Amasse Tanto Assim. This album was named after another one of her big hits that reached number one on the music charts. The album included a song with American singer Brian McKnight. Her 2003 album, Clube Carnavalesco Innocentes Em Progresso, also achieved gold certification.
Big Success with Live Albums
In 2004, Ivete released a live album called MTV Ao Vivo Ivete Sangalo. This album featured her biggest hits, including some from her time with Banda Eva. The album sold incredibly well, especially because of the song "Sorte Grande." Fans loved it so much they renamed it "Poeira." This song became a huge hit at parties, on the radio, and even at soccer stadiums. "Sorte Grande" was also featured in the Fifa 2005 video game.
The album was certified diamond, making it the second best-selling album in Brazil in 2004. The DVD of the concert, filmed at the Fonte Nova stadium, sold over 600,000 copies. It is the best-selling music DVD in Brazil ever!
In 2005, Billboard magazine called Ivete Sangalo "Brazil's Queen of Song." Her album As Supernovas quickly received triple platinum certification. This album had a different feel, with some songs inspired by the 1970s. It also included her cover of "Soy Loco por ti America," a song by Gilberto Gil. This song became the theme for the TV show América, making it very popular. Her song "Quando a Chuva Passar" was even nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. This was special because she sings in Portuguese, not Spanish. As Supernovas also earned diamond certification, confirming her as Brazil's top female solo singer.
Ivete's popularity on TV led TV Globo, Brazil's biggest TV station, to invite her to host the show Estação Globo.
On December 16, 2006, Ivete performed at the famous Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Many global music stars like Paul McCartney and Madonna have performed there. Ivete was the first Brazilian artist to perform there since 2002. The concert was released as a DVD in May 2007.
