Smurfs: The Lost Village is a fun computer-animated movie from 2017. It's based on the popular Smurfs comic books created by Peyo. The film was made by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation.

This movie is a fresh start for the Smurfs on screen, different from Sony's earlier movies that mixed live-action with animation. Kelly Asbury directed it, and the story was written by Stacey Harman and Pamela Ribon. Many famous voices are in the film, including Demi Lovato, Rainn Wilson, Joe Manganiello, Mandy Patinkin, and Julia Roberts.

In the story, a mysterious map sends Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy, and Hefty on an exciting adventure. They need to find a secret Smurf village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. This film also introduced new female Smurf characters to the Smurfs world.

Smurfs: The Lost Village first showed on April 2, 2017, and was released in theaters on April 7, 2017. It earned over $197 million worldwide, costing about $60 million to make. The movie was dedicated to Jonathan Winters, who voiced Papa Smurf in earlier films, and Anton Yelchin, who voiced Clumsy Smurf in this movie. Both had passed away before the film was released. It was also dedicated to Nine Culliford, the wife of Smurfs creator Peyo.

What is the Story About?

In the peaceful Smurf Village, the Smurfs live happily with their leader, Papa Smurf. Some of the Smurfs you'll meet are Clumsy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Smurfette. Smurfette was actually created by the evil wizard Gargamel from a lump of clay. But Papa Smurf helped her become good, and she joined the village. Gargamel's main goal is to catch all the Smurfs, steal their magic, and become the most powerful wizard ever.

Smurfette's Discovery

One day, while smurfboarding, Smurfette sees a strange creature that might be another Smurf. But then, Gargamel captures her and takes her to his castle. There, she accidentally drops a hat that the creature left behind. This hat helps Gargamel create a special potion that shows him where the Smurf Village is on a map!

Luckily, Hefty, Brainy, and Clumsy help Smurfette escape and get back to their village. Papa Smurf is upset they disobeyed him and tells them to stay in their houses. He doesn't believe their story about another Smurf village.

The Journey Begins

Even though Papa Smurf said no, Smurfette sneaks out to find the lost village. Brainy, Clumsy, and Hefty join her. But Gargamel soon finds out they are looking for the village. He sets off with his pet cat Azrael and pet vulture Monty to stop them.

The four Smurfs follow the map, going on many wild adventures. They meet strange creatures, like dragonflies that breathe fire. They also get lost in a tricky cave maze. They escape the maze thanks to a stampede of glowing rabbits!

Next, they build a raft and sail down a river. But Gargamel, Azrael, and Monty catch up to them again. After a short chase, Gargamel falls out of his own raft. The Smurfs bravely save him, but instead of saying thank you, he pushes them out of their raft! They tumble down a waterfall.

Meeting New Smurfs

Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, and Clumsy end up on a beach. Brainy realizes they only saved Gargamel because his special pack was ruined. Soon, the leaf-covered creature they saw earlier captures them. It turns out the creature and others are actually female Smurfs!

They are taken to Smurfy Grove, a hidden village. There, they meet Smurf Storm, Smurf Blossom, Smurf Lily (the Smurf from earlier), Smurf Melody, and their leader, Smurf Willow. Everyone in Smurfy Grove welcomes the Smurfs to their home.

Smurf Storm and Clumsy leave the village to find Gargamel and warn the others. During their trip, Clumsy accidentally tells Smurf Storm that Smurfette was created by Gargamel. This makes Smurf Storm not trust Smurfette. Gargamel, who was stuck in a swamp full of piranhas, sees Clumsy and Smurf Storm. He sends Monty to attack them, but they fly away to warn the village.

Gargamel Attacks Smurfy Grove

After a tour of Smurfy Grove, Smurfette starts to really like living there. Hefty and Brainy are not so happy about it. Smurf Storm and Clumsy return and tell everyone that Smurfette was created by Gargamel. The female Smurfs get ready for an attack that night. But instead of Gargamel, Papa Smurf appears! The female Smurfs are happy to welcome him.

Soon after, Gargamel, Azrael, and Monty arrive and destroy Smurfy Grove. They capture every Smurf except Smurfette. Gargamel notices that Smurfette isn't a "real" Smurf and leaves her alone, thinking she's useless to him. Smurfette feels very sad and guilty. But then, Snappy shows her a picture of her and the other Smurfs. This makes her realize something important, and she heads back to Gargamel's lair to save her friends.

The Final Showdown

At Gargamel's lair, Brainy comes up with a plan to escape, and Papa Smurf and Smurf Willow agree to it. Hefty, Brainy, Clumsy, and some of the female Smurfs start the plan. But Gargamel and Azrael spot them! They put some of the female Smurfs and Clumsy into Gargamel's "Smurfilator," a machine that takes away their magic.

Smurfette appears and tricks Gargamel into thinking she wants to be an evil Smurf again. Gargamel tries to turn Smurfette evil, but she starts absorbing his magic powers instead! Gargamel is sent flying back into the piranha lake with Monty and Azrael.

The Smurfs are free, but Smurfette has turned back into a lifeless lump of clay.

A Happy Ending

Back at Smurf Village, the Smurfs create a memorial for Smurfette. Their strong energy and love for her bring her back to life! Everyone celebrates happily. Smurf Village and Smurfy Grove are now united. In the end, Smurfette finally understands her purpose and truly feels like a Smurf.

During the credits, Gargamel, Azrael, and Monty are walking on a hill. Gargamel blames Azrael for ruining his plans, not Monty. He also reveals that he adopted Azrael.
