Adventure in the Arctic: A Snowmobile Journey
In March 2016, Pauloosie Keyootak, his son, and another adult went on a snowmobile trip. They left Iqaluit and were heading to Pangnirtung. This journey is about 297 kilometers (185 miles) north.
Missing Travelers and a Big Search
When the three travelers did not arrive in Pangnirtung, search and rescue teams started looking for them. This happened on March 29. Teams from both Iqaluit and Pangnirtung began the search. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax sent a special Lockheed C-130 Hercules plane to help. This plane is used for search and rescue missions.
A local Twin Otter plane also joined the search. It had people on board who were looking out for the missing group. Officials said that a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter was also sent. This helicopter is often used for rescues in tough conditions.
Found Safe and Sound
On March 31, after several days, the three travelers were found alive! They were about 160 kilometers (99 miles) south of Iqaluit. This was quite far from where they were supposed to be. The Twin Otter plane spotted them from the air. The plane then landed nearby.
During the landing, the Twin Otter plane was damaged and could not take off again. So, the CH-149 Cormorant helicopter came to pick up the men. Everyone was safe, which was a great relief to their families and the search teams.
In Nunavut, politicians are chosen by the people in elections. When you see an "electoral record," it shows how many votes a person received in an election. This helps people understand who won and how popular each candidate was.
