The Pauma and Yuima Reservation
The Pauma and Yuima Reservation is also known as the Pauma Indian Reservation. It is a special area of land set aside for the tribe. You can find it in the northeastern part of San Diego County.
This reservation was created in 1872. It covers about 5,877 acres of land. That's a lot of space!
Where is the Reservation Located?
The main part of the Pauma reservation and the tribe's headquarters are in the Pauma Valley. This area is located below Palomar Mountain.
There are also two smaller pieces of land that make up the Yuima reservation. These are in the foothills of the Palomar Mountains, just east of the main reservation. These smaller areas are not currently lived on.
The Pala Indian Reservation is right next to the western border of the Pauma reservation. The closest town to the reservations is Valley Center, which is to the southwest.
How the Pauma Band Supports Itself
The Pauma Band of Luiseño Mission Indians runs several businesses. These businesses help support the tribe and its members.
Businesses Owned by the Tribe
The tribe owns and operates Casino Pauma. They also run several restaurants and lounges inside the casino. These include the Pauma Bay Café, Casino Pauma Deli, Red Parrot Pizza, and the Red Parrot Lounge. All of these businesses are located in Pauma Valley.
How Gaming Revenues Help the Tribe
The money earned from the casino and other businesses is called gaming revenue. This money is very important for the tribe. It helps pay for things like healthcare, welfare, and education for their people. It also helps improve the reservation's infrastructure, which includes things like roads and buildings.
Education for Tribal Members
Children living on the reservation attend schools in the local area.
School Districts Serving the Reservation
The reservation is served by two main school districts. Younger students attend schools in the Pauma Elementary School District. Older students go to high schools in the Escondido Union High School District.
