Pavilion Indian Band facts for kids
The Pavilion Indian Band is also known as the Ts'kw'aylaxw First Nation. They are a First Nations group in British Columbia, Canada. Their home is in the Fraser Canyon area. This band was formed in the 1860s. This happened when the government of British Columbia set up a system of Indian reserves.
The people of Pavilion are connected to two larger groups. These are the Secwepemc (Shuswap) and the St'at'imc (Lillooet) Nations. Their community is called Pavilion. It is located in the Fraser Canyon, north of Lillooet.
The Pavilion Band is one of three Secwepemc bands. They are not part of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council or the Northern Shuswap Tribal Council. However, because they are also partly Sťáťimc (Lillooet), they belong to the Lillooet Tribal Council. This council is part of the St'at'imc Nation.
In the St'at'imcets language, Pavilion is called Ts'kw'aylacw or Ts'kw'aylaxw. This name means "frost." Pavilion is high up and often shady in winter. This can make the ground stay frozen. In the Secwepmectsin language, the name is Tsk'wéylecw. The people themselves are called the Tsk'waylacw'mc in St'at'imcets. They are called Tsk'weylecw'mc in Secwepmectsin.
