Payoyo cheese is a special kind of cheese from Spain. It is made in a beautiful mountain area called the Sierra de Grazalema. This tasty cheese gets its unique flavor from the milk of two animals: the Payoya goat and the Merina grazalemeña sheep. The name Payoyo comes from the town of Villaluenga del Rosario, where many of these cheeses are made.
Payoyo cheese started being made in 1997. Since then, it has become a very popular food in Spain. It is often found in special food shops called delicatessens. Even before the name "Payoyo cheese" became famous, a similar cheese was made in 1986 by a company called El Bosqueño.
Awards and Recognition
Payoyo cheese has won many important awards. These awards come from both Spain and other countries. For example, in 2016, a Payoyo cheese from El Bosqueño won third place at the World Cheese Awards. This is a very big competition for cheeses from all over the world.
In 2018, another brand of Payoyo cheese, La Pastora de Grazalema, was named the best mixed-milk cheese. This award was given at a big food show in Madrid, Spain, called Salón de Gourmets. These awards show how special and delicious Payoyo cheese is.
