Payson is a small village located in Adams County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 1,025 people lived there. Payson is part of the larger Quincy area, which includes parts of Illinois and Missouri.

History of Payson
Payson was first established in the spring of 1835.
Political Events in 1860
During the 1860 presidential election, there was a lot of excitement and strong feelings. People in Payson supported Stephen Douglas, who was the candidate for the Democratic Party. They put up banners and even a dummy of Abraham Lincoln, the candidate for the Republican Party.
This led to two arguments with a group called the "Wide Awakes." The Wide Awakes were Lincoln supporters from Quincy. During the second argument, on August 26, 1860, some shots were fired, and a few people were hurt. This event was similar to another incident nearby called the "Stone's Prairie Riot." These events show how passionate people were about politics back then.
