It is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a community that is counted in the census but isn't officially a city or town. In 2020, about 624 people lived there. Peña Blanca is also considered part of the larger Albuquerque area.
The name Peña Blanca comes from the Spanish words for "white rock."
