Who Are the Treasurers?
The Treasurer of the United States is a very old position, created way back in 1777. Many people have held this job over the years, helping to manage the country's money.
The first Treasurer was Michael Hillegas, who started in 1775, even before the United States officially became a country! He worked under the Confederation Congress and then under George Washington, the first President.
The person who served the longest as Treasurer was Thomas T. Tucker. He held the job for over 26 years, from 1801 to 1828, working for four different Presidents. On the other hand, Carmi A. Thompson had the shortest term, serving for only about four months in 1912-1913.
Over time, more women have been appointed to this role. The first woman to become Treasurer was Georgia Neese Clark in 1949. Since then, many women have held this important position.
