Jovita Carranza (born June 29, 1949) is an American businesswoman. She served as the 26th leader of the Small Business Administration (SBA) from 2020 to 2021. Before that, she was the 44th Treasurer of the United States from 2017 to 2020.

President Donald Trump appointed her to both of these important roles. Earlier in her career, she was the Deputy Administrator of the SBA from 2006 to 2009. President George W. Bush appointed her to this position, and the U.S. Senate approved her. Before working for the government, Carranza was a top leader at United Parcel Service (UPS), a large delivery company.

Early Life and Education

Jovita Carranza was born in Illinois in 1949. She grew up in Chicago in a family that had moved from Mexico. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father worked as a factory foreman.

Carranza studied at the University of Miami. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). She also received special training in business and finance from other well-known universities.

Jovita Carranza started her career at United Parcel Service (UPS) in the mid-1970s. Her first job was handling boxes during the night shift. She worked hard and moved up through the company. She became a vice president, managing operations in the United States. She also led international operations for Latin America and the Caribbean. When she left UPS, she was the vice president of air operations in Louisville, Kentucky. She was the highest-ranking Latina in UPS history.

Working for the Government

In 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Carranza as the Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA). She held this position until 2009. The SBA helps small businesses grow and succeed. As Deputy Administrator, she helped manage an agency with many offices across the country. The SBA also managed billions of dollars in loans for businesses and disaster relief. She worked to make the SBA better at helping its customers.

After her time at the SBA, Carranza started her own consulting company called The JCR Group. This company helped other businesses with their growth and management. She also became a speaker and writer on business and political topics.

In 2017, President Donald Trump appointed Carranza to be the Treasurer of the United States. She was sworn into this role in June 2017. The Treasurer is in charge of the money that comes into and goes out of the U.S. government.

In 2019, President Trump nominated Carranza to lead the Small Business Administration. The United States Senate confirmed her nomination in January 2020. She was sworn in a week later. As the Administrator of the SBA, she helped lead the agency's response to the economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, she helped launch the Paycheck Protection Program. This program provided emergency loans to businesses to help them keep their employees.
