Roasted peaberry coffee beans

Peaberry is a special kind of coffee bean. It's also called caracolillo in Spanish. Normally, a coffee fruit (called a "cherry") has two seeds inside. These seeds grow flat on one side because they press against each other. But sometimes, only one seed grows inside the cherry. When this happens, the single seed grows into a round, pea-shaped bean. This unique bean is what we call a peaberry. About 5% of all coffee beans harvested are peaberries.

The usual coffee beans, with their flat sides, are sometimes called flat berry beans.

Peaberry coffee is very well-known, especially from Tanzania. The peaberry type of Kona coffee from Hawaii has also become quite famous.

What Makes Peaberry Coffee Special?

Peaberry beans are different from regular flat beans. Because of their round shape, they roast in a special way. To make sure the coffee tastes its best, peaberry beans are often separated from flat beans before roasting. This helps them roast evenly.

How Peaberry Coffee Tastes

Coffee made from peaberry beans tastes different from coffee made from regular beans from the same plant. This is because their unique shape changes how they roast. Many people say peaberry coffee has a brighter, more lively taste. It can also have more interesting smells and flavors, but it might feel a bit lighter in your mouth compared to coffee from flat beans.
