Peabody Terrace facts for kids
Peabody Terrace is a large housing complex at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is located on the north side of the Charles River. This complex is mainly for graduate students, especially those who are married and have families.
It was built in 1964. The buildings have a unique design style called Brutalism. This style often uses raw concrete and has a strong, blocky look. The complex starts with three-story buildings around the outside. Inside, the buildings get taller, reaching five and seven stories. There are also three tall towers, each 22 stories high.
Some people find its design very interesting, especially architects. Others might not like its look as much.
About Peabody Terrace
Peabody Terrace was finished in 1965. It cost about $8.5 million to build. The complex covers an area of 5.9 acres (about 2.4 hectares). It has a total size of 650,000 square feet (about 60,000 square meters).
The complex includes about 500 apartments. These apartments come in different sizes. There are small "efficiency" units, which are like studio apartments. There are also units with one, two, or three bedrooms. All the apartments have ceilings that are 7 feet 6 inches (about 2.3 meters) high.
Peabody Terrace offers many useful facilities for its residents. These include playgrounds for children and nurseries. There are also roof terraces where people can relax. Laundry rooms are available for residents to use. The complex also has rooms for meetings, seminars, and studying. A parking garage is provided for cars.
To help people move around quickly, the elevators in the tall towers stop only on every third floor. This design helps to save space and make the elevators faster.
The Peabody Terrace Children's Center is also located on the grounds of the complex. This center is connected with Harvard University.
