History of the Peabody Library Building
How the Library Started in Peabody
The very first library in Peabody was built in 1875. This building was very helpful for the community. However, after a few decades, it became too small for all the books and people who wanted to use it.
Getting a Grant for a New Library
A group called the Commercial Club decided to apply for a special grant. This grant came from the Carnegie Corporation. They offered money to towns to build new libraries. By the spring of 1913, the Carnegie Corporation agreed to give Peabody $10,000. This was a lot of money back then!
The new library building was planned to look like the Carnegie library in Galena, Illinois. The original, smaller library building was moved to the Peabody City Park. Then, the new, bigger Carnegie library was built right on the old library's spot. The doors of the new library opened to the public on April 18, 1914.
The Original Library's New Home
Later on, the first library building was moved again. It became the Peabody Historical Library Museum. This means you can still visit the very first library building and learn about Peabody's history!
Modern Services at the Library
Today, the Peabody Township Library offers many modern services. Since 2008, it has had computers with fast internet access. There is also free WiFi for everyone to use. The library is part of the North Central Kansas Libraries System. This system allows people to borrow books from other libraries in the area.
