Peachtree Mall is a large shopping mall located in Columbus, Georgia. It opened its doors on August 5, 1975. Today, it is one of the main shopping areas in Columbus, along with Columbus Park Crossing. This is especially true since another big mall, Columbus Square Mall, closed down in the early 2000s.
Exploring Peachtree Mall's History
How the Mall Began
When Peachtree Mall first opened, it had a simple design with just one floor. At each end of the main shopping area, there were two big stores. These large stores are often called anchor stores because they help attract shoppers to the mall. The first anchor stores were Gayfers and Montgomery Ward.
In 1985, the mall grew! A new food court was added, giving shoppers more places to eat. Also, a third anchor store, Parisian, joined the mall at this time.
Major Changes and New Stores
A big expansion happened in November 1994. The department store J.C. Penney moved into the mall from its old spot at Columbus Square Mall. To get to this new J.C. Penney section, shoppers had to walk through the Dillard's store (which used to be Gayfer's). This was a bit unusual for a mall layout!
In late 2000, Montgomery Ward closed down because the company went out of business. A new store, Rich's, opened in its place in 2002. Later, in 2005, Rich's changed its name to Macy's.
Parisian, another anchor store, closed in February 2007. This happened after the company merged with Belk. For a while, there were plans for a Belk store to open in that spot, but those plans were later canceled. The space remained empty for some time.
Finally, on December 3, 2015, the owners of Peachtree Mall bought back the old Parisian space from Dillard's. Then, on February 2, 2017, a new store called At Home opened in that large area.
