Peak 2266 is an interesting mountain located in the northeastern part of Minnesota, in Cook County. It holds the title of the second-highest point in the entire state, standing tall after Eagle Mountain. This peak is part of the Misquah Hills, a beautiful and rugged area known for its forests and lakes.

What Makes Peak 2266 Special?

Peak 2266 is quite unique because it's not a mountain many people visit. Unlike popular hiking spots, it doesn't have a clear path or trail leading to its top. This means it's rarely climbed by adventurers. Its height is 2,266 feet (about 691 meters) above sea level.

How Was Its Height Discovered?

For a long time, people weren't sure which mountain was the very highest in Minnesota. In 1961, a special survey was done to measure the heights of different peaks. This survey was very important because it officially confirmed that Eagle Mountain was the highest point in the state.

During the same survey, they also measured Peak 2266. To everyone's surprise, they found that Peak 2266 was also taller than the mountain previously thought to be the highest! Before 1961, a spot called "point 2230" in the Misquah Hills was believed to be the record holder. The 1961 survey changed the record books, showing that both Eagle Mountain and Peak 2266 were higher.

Exploring the Misquah Hills

Peak 2266 is nestled within the Misquah Hills. This area is known for its wild and untouched nature. It's a place with thick forests, many lakes, and rocky landscapes. Because it's so remote and doesn't have many trails, it's a great spot for wildlife and those who love to explore truly wild places.
