Pearl Kiyawn Nageak Brower is an amazing leader from Alaska. She is part Inupiat, Armenian, and Chippewa. Her middle names, Kiyawn Nageak, are pronounced Qaiyaan Naġiaq in the Iñupiaq language. From 2012 to 2020, she was the president of Iḷisaġvik College. This college is special because it focuses on the culture and education of the Inupiat people.
Her Early Life and School
Pearl Brower was born in Barrow, Alaska. She grew up there and in Utqiagvik, Alaska, as well as in Northern California. Her family has roots in the Iñupiat people, Armenia, and the Chippewa tribe.
Her grandmother, who was Inupiat, was an elected member of the North Slope Borough School Board. She worked hard to support education for everyone. Pearl's grandfather on her mother's side was a "culture bearer." This means he helped keep traditional stories and ways of life alive in the Alaska North Slope.
Pearl Brower went to Shasta College. In 2004, she earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). These degrees were in Alaska Native Studies and Anthropology. She continued her studies at UAF, earning a master's degree in Alaska Native and Rural Development in 2010. In 2016, she completed her Ph.D. at UAF. Her doctoral studies focused on indigenous leadership within indigenous studies.
Her Work and Leadership
Before joining Iḷisaġvik College, Pearl Brower managed a special grant. This grant was for culture and education in the North Slope Borough. She also worked as a museum curator at the Iñupiat Heritage Center.
In 2007, she started working at Iḷisaġvik College. There, she helped with many important areas. These included getting support for the college, helping students, and marketing. She became the director of external relations and development. This role involved building relationships outside the college and raising money.
In 2012, Pearl Brower was chosen to be the president of Iḷisaġvik College. She had already been serving as the interim president for three months. In 2015, the Alaska Journal of Commerce recognized her as one of Alaska's top "40 under 40" leaders. This award celebrates young, successful people in Alaska.

Pearl Brower is married to Donald Jesse Darling Jr. They have two daughters together.
