Dame Calliopa Pearlette Louisy was born on June 8, 1946. She is a very important person from Saint Lucia. She served as the governor-general of Saint Lucia from September 19, 1997, until she retired on December 31, 2017. She was the first woman to hold this high position. She also served as governor-general for the longest time in Saint Lucia's history.

About Dame Pearlette Louisy
Early Life and Education
Dame Pearlette Louisy was born in a village called Laborie in Saint Lucia. She went to the Laborie Infant School and Primary Schools when she was young. In 1960, she earned a special scholarship called the Javouhey Scholarship. This allowed her to attend the St. Joseph's Convent for her secondary education.
After finishing high school in 1965, she received another scholarship in 1966. This was the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) scholarship. With this help, she studied English and French at the University of the West Indies in Cave Hill, Barbados.
In 1972, she received another scholarship from the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan. This allowed her to get a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in linguistics. She studied how to teach languages at Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada. Later, in 1991, she went to the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. There, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in education.
Career in Education
Dame Pearlette Louisy spent most of her working life helping to improve education in Saint Lucia. She was a teacher for many years. From 1969 to 1972 and again from 1975 to 1976, she taught at the St Joseph's Convent.
From 1976 to 1986, she taught French. After that, she became the Principal of the St. Lucia A Level College. This college later joined with the Morne Technical School to become the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. At this new college, she first worked as a Dean. Then, she became the Vice Principal and later the Principal of the college.
Special Recognition and Awards
Because of her important work, Dame Pearlette Louisy has received many special awards. In 1999, the University of Bristol gave her an honorary degree called Doctor of Laws (LL.D.). This is a special award given to people who have made great contributions.
On July 16, 1999, she was given a very high honour called Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. In 2011, the University of West Indies also gave her an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLB) degree.
