The Pearsons Hall of Science is a historic building at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. It was built in 1892. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It was recognized for its special design by the famous architect Daniel Burnham. It also showed how much science learning was growing at the college.

The Story of Pearsons Hall

Pearsons Hall was built with money given by Dr. D. K. Pearsons. He was a Quaker man from Pawnee, Illinois. Dr. Pearsons once visited Beloit and saw the college being built. This sight inspired him to donate $100,000 to the school almost 40 years later.

The hall was used as the main science center for the college until 1963. Today, the building has many different uses. It holds meeting rooms, places to eat, and student lounges. It also has student service offices, a mailroom, and a radio station. Student government and publication offices are there too.

The hall was officially renamed the Jeffris-Wood Campus Center. This name honors attorney and businessman Pierpont J. E. Wood and his wife, Helen Jeffris Wood. However, many people on campus still call it Pearsons Hall.

Modern Updates and Changes

Pearsons Hall has been updated several times over the years. In 1931, the building had its first big renovation. Workers updated the wiring, plumbing, and flooring. They also improved the ventilation and equipment. A new skylight was added during this renovation.

A second major renovation happened in 1985. Architect Edward Ware completed this work. After this update, the building was officially rededicated as the Jeffris-Wood Campus Center. The college bookstore also moved into the Jeffris-Wood Campus Center after this renovation.
