History of Pawnee
How Pawnee Got Its Name
The village of Pawnee was named after the Pawnee Tribe. This is a way to honor the Native American groups who lived in the area long ago.
Important Events in Pawnee
Pawnee has a history with some notable events. On October 13, 1902, there was a serious accident at the Victor Mine. Six workers lost their lives when an explosive charge caused coal dust to catch fire inside the mine shaft.
More recently, on August 6, 2023, a powerful tornado hit the area just north of Pawnee. This tornado was classified as an EF2, meaning it was quite strong. It caused damage to homes and businesses in the path of the storm.
