Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pecks Beach, sometimes called Peck's Beach, is a cool natural island located along the famous Jersey Shore in Cape May County, New Jersey. It's a special type of island known as a barrier island. These islands are like natural shields, protecting the mainland from strong ocean waves and storms.

What is Pecks Beach?

Pecks Beach is a long, narrow strip of land made mostly of sand. It runs right next to the Atlantic Ocean. This island acts as a natural barrier, which is how it gets its name. It helps protect the land behind it from big waves and strong winds.

Where is Pecks Beach Located?

This interesting island is found between two important water passages. To its northeast, you'll find the Great Egg Harbor Inlet. To its southwest, there's Corson Inlet. These inlets are narrow waterways that connect the ocean to bays and rivers behind the island.

Ocean City: A City on Pecks Beach

Did you know that the entire city of Ocean City is built on Pecks Beach? This popular resort town covers the whole island. It also includes some smaller, uninhabited islands nearby. So, when you visit Ocean City, you're actually exploring a barrier island!

How Pecks Beach Was Described Long Ago

People have been describing Pecks Beach for a long time. In 1834, it was noted as being about ten miles long. It stretched from Corson's Inlet up to Egg Harbour Inlet. Later, in 1878, it was described as about eight miles long. Back then, it even had trees like red cedar and wild cherry growing on it. Behind the beach, there was a body of water called Peck's Bay. This bay was connected to the larger Great Egg Harbor Bay.
