Pedernales is a lively coastal town located in Ecuador. It's the main town, or capital, of a region called Pedernales Canton. This town is an important spot because two major roads meet here: Ecuador's Pacific Highway 15, which runs along the coast, and Highway 382, which ends right in Pedernales.
A Big Earthquake Hits Pedernales
In April 2016, Pedernales experienced a very strong earthquake. This earthquake measured 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale, which is a way to measure how powerful an earthquake is. Sadly, much of the town and nearby areas were badly damaged or completely destroyed.
Rebuilding Pedernales
After the earthquake, the people of Pedernales worked hard to rebuild their town. By March 2017, a large part of Pedernales had already been rebuilt, showing the strong spirit of its community.
