Pedesina is a very small town, also called a comune or municipality, in the Province of Sondrio. This province is part of the Lombardy region in Italy. Pedesina is located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Milan. It is also about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Sondrio.
As of December 31, 2008, Pedesina had only 33 people living there. It covers an area of 6.3 square kilometers (2.4 square miles). This makes Pedesina one of the least populated towns in all of Italy. Another very small town like it is Morterone. Pedesina shares its borders with several other towns. These include Bema, Gerola Alta, Premana, Rasura, and Rogolo.
How Pedesina's Population Changed
Pedesina has seen its population change a lot over the years. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, more than 200 people lived there. The population reached its highest point in 1911 with 281 residents.
However, after that, the number of people living in Pedesina started to drop. By 1931, it was down to 159. This decline continued steadily through the decades. In 1971, the population was only 59. By 1991, it had fallen to just 33 people. In 2001, it was 34, showing it stayed very small. This trend shows how some small towns in Italy have become much less populated over time.
Where is Pedesina Located?
Pedesina is found in a mountainous area of Lombardy. The Province of Sondrio is known for its beautiful Alps mountains. Being in this region means Pedesina is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. It is a quiet place, far from big cities.
The town's location in the mountains means it can experience cold winters. The image of the town's entry covered in snow shows this. Its small size and remote location make it a unique place in Italy.
What is a Comune?
In Italy, a comune is like a local government area or a municipality. It's the smallest kind of administrative division. Each comune has its own local government. This government takes care of things like local services and managing the town. Pedesina is one such comune, even though it is very small.
