Pedro "El Rockero" Alcázar, whose real name was Guillermo Gonzalez, was a boxer from Panama. He was born on August 28, 1975, and sadly passed away on June 24, 2002. He became a world champion in boxing, winning the WBO Super flyweight title.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Pedro Alcázar started his professional boxing career in 1995. This means he began boxing for money and titles, not just for fun or as an amateur. He had a very impressive start! He won 22 fights, had one draw (a tie), and one fight that was declared "no contest" (meaning it didn't count for either boxer).
After building such a strong record, Pedro Alcázar got the chance to fight for a world title. He faced a boxer named Adonis Rivas and won, becoming the WBO Super flyweight champion. This was a huge achievement for him!
He later lost his championship title to another boxer, Fernando Montiel, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight happened on June 22, 2002, and it turned out to be his last match.
Pedro Alcázar's Passing
After his fight with Fernando Montiel, Pedro Alcázar was checked by doctors right away. They said he seemed fine and didn't show any serious injuries. The day after the fight, he even went sightseeing.
However, two days after the fight, while he was in his hotel room getting ready to fly back home to Panama, he suddenly collapsed. He was quickly taken to the hospital, but sadly, he passed away.
This was a very unusual and sad event in boxing history. Usually, if a boxer has serious injuries, they show up much sooner. Pedro Alcázar's passing made people realize that sometimes, dangerous symptoms can take a while to appear after a fight. This led to important discussions among boxing authorities about making sure boxers get medical checks for up to 48 hours after a fight, to better protect their health and safety.
Pedro Alcázar was a student and friend of the famous boxer Roberto Durán, who is considered a legend in the sport. Roberto Durán was even one of the people who helped carry Pedro Alcázar's coffin at his funeral.
