Doctor Pedro Barriere was an important Spanish leader in a place called San Salvador. This was before El Salvador became its own country. He was in charge from 1819 to 1821. After San Salvador became independent from Spain, he was the first leader for a short time in 1821. He passed away on May 18, 1827.

Pedro Barriere's Early Life
Pedro Barriere was born in Cuba, which was part of the Spanish Empire. He started working for the Spanish government in the late 1700s. He became a lieutenant, which is a military rank. During the wars where countries in America fought for freedom from Spain, Barriere fought for Spain. He was against those who wanted independence.
Pedro Barriere's Political Career
In 1819, Pedro Barriere became the leader of San Salvador. This area was then called the Intendancy of San Salvador. It was part of a larger Spanish territory called New Spain.
On September 15, 1821, a very important paper was signed in Guatemala City. This paper was the Act of Independence of Central America. It meant that Central American countries were now free from Spain. After this, Barriere continued to be the political chief of San Salvador.
Arrests and New Leadership
On October 4, 1821, Barriere ordered the arrest of several important people. These included Manuel José Arce and Juan Manuel Rodríguez. They had asked him to hold an election for new leaders. Barriere was worried they would start a revolution against him in El Salvador. So, he sent them to Guatemala.
When people heard about these arrests, José Matías Delgado led a movement against Barriere. A group called the Consultive Junta then declared Delgado as the new political chief of El Salvador. Barriere released the prisoners. He was replaced by Delgado on November 28, 1821.
Pedro Barriere's Death
Pedro Barriere was killed on May 18, 1827. This happened during a fight called the Battle of Milingo. This battle was part of the First Central American Civil War. He was fighting for the forces of Manuel José Arce against the forces of Francisco Morazán.
Personal Life
Pedro Barriere was married to Ana Paulina Pajares Palacios. Her parents were Antonio Victoriano Pajares and Juana Felipa Palacios.
