Pedro Camejo was a brave Venezuelan soldier. He is also known as Negro Primero, which means "The First Black". He fought in the Venezuelan War of Independence. First, he fought with the Spanish Royal Army. Later, he joined the Independence Army. He rose to the rank of lieutenant.
His nickname, Negro Primero, came from his courage. He was very skilled with a spear. He was always at the front of the attack in battles. Some say he was the only Black officer in Simón Bolívar's army.
Pedro Camejo's Life Story
Pedro Camejo was born on March 30, 1790. He was born in San Juan de Payara. At birth, he was a slave. He belonged to a Spanish royalist named Vincente Alonzo.
In 1816, he joined the military. He fought for Venezuela's independence. This act earned him his freedom.
Camejo was one of 150 lancers. Lancers are soldiers who use spears. He fought bravely in the Battle of Las Queseras del Medio. For his courage, he received the Order of the Liberators of Venezuela. This was a very important award.
He also fought in the Battle of Carabobo. He was part of a cavalry regiment. This regiment was led by José Antonio Páez. The writer Eduardo Blanco wrote about Camejo. In his book Venezuela Heroica, he described a sad moment. Camejo went to General Páez during the battle. He said, "My general, I come to tell you goodbye, because I am dead." He spoke with a strong voice, even though he was badly hurt.
