Pedro Lozano (1697–1752) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, historian, and ethnographer. He traveled to South America and wrote many important books. His writings helped people learn about the geography, plants, animals, and cultures of the region. He focused especially on the Gran Chaco area.
Pedro Lozano's Life and Travels
Pedro Lozano was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1697. When he was young, he moved to the Americas in 1714. He went to the Jesuit Reductions in Paraguay. These were special communities set up by Jesuits.
He studied at the main college in Córdoba, Argentina. There, he became a teacher of philosophy and theology. From 1724 to 1730, he also taught in Santa Fe. Later, he returned to Córdoba. He became the official historian for the Jesuit area of Paraguay.
Pedro Lozano wrote many books about geography and history. His most famous work is Descripción chorographica [...] del Gran Chaco. This book included a detailed map by Father Antonio Machoni. It also had many facts about the people living in the Gran Chaco region. He described the rivers, different types of soil, and many plants. He was especially interested in plants used for medicine. He also wrote interesting things about the animals there.
Pedro Lozano died in Humahuaca, which is now in Argentina. He was buried in the church of San Antonio de Padua in the small town of Uquia.

Con un cabal Relación Histórica de lo que en ellos han obrado para conquistarlas algunos Gobernadores y Ministros Reales, y los Misioneros Jesuitas para reducirlos a la fe del Verdadero Dios. (Published in Córdoba, 1733). This long title describes his detailed book about the Gran Chaco region.
- Historia de la Compañía de la Jesús de la Provincia del Paraguay (Published in Madrid, 1755). This book tells the history of the Jesuit work in Paraguay.
- Historia de la Conquista del Paraguay, Río de la Plata y Tucumán (Reprinted in Buenos Aires, 1873–75). This book covers the history of the conquest of Paraguay and other regions.
