Pedro Schwartz Girón OBE (born in 1935) is a Spanish economist and a former politician. An economist studies how people and countries use resources. A politician is someone who works in government.
Early Life and Education
Pedro Schwartz was born on January 30, 1935, in Madrid, Spain. His father, Juan Schwartz Díaz-Flores, was a diplomat. A diplomat is a person who represents their country in other nations. His father served as the Spanish ambassador in Austria. He also helped save Jewish people during the the Holocaust, a very sad time in history.
Pedro Schwartz went to the Complutense University of Madrid. There, he earned degrees in arts and law. He then continued his studies at the London School of Economics. He received a master's degree and a PhD in Economics from this university.
Career as an Economist and Politician
Pedro Schwartz has had a long and important career. He is a research professor of Economics at CEU San Pablo University. He also teaches economics at the University of Buckingham. He works as an expert at the Cato Institute, which is a research group.
In 1977, Schwartz joined the Mont Pelerin Society. This is a group of economists who believe in free markets and individual freedom. He later became the president of this society from 2014 to 2016.
Schwartz also served as a politician. He was a member of the Spanish parliament, called the Congress of Deputies, from 1982 to 1986. This means he helped make laws for Spain.
In 2005, he became a member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas. This is a special academy in Spain for experts in moral and political sciences.
In 1990, Pedro Schwartz was given a special honor. He was made an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire. This is a high award from the United Kingdom.
Family Life
Pedro Schwartz has been married twice and has four children. He married his first wife, Mercedes Juste Werner, in 1966. They had one child together. Later, he married Ana Maria Bravo Zabalgoitia. They have three children.
