Pedro Trebbau was born in a city called Cologne, in Germany. From a very young age, he loved nature and animals. He studied biology at universities in Germany. He also became a veterinarian, which means he learned how to care for animals.

In 1953, when he was 24, Pedro Trebbau moved to Venezuela. He liked it so much that he decided to stay. In 1957, he officially became a Venezuelan citizen.

Protecting Venezuelan Wildlife

Pedro Trebbau started his work in Venezuela at the El Pinar Zoo in Caracas. He helped manage the zoo and care for the animals. He also taught at the Institute of Tropical Zoology at the Central University of Venezuela.

One of his most amazing achievements happened in 1968. A big dam, called the Guri Dam, was being built. This dam would flood a huge area. Pedro Trebbau led a brave mission to save animals that would have drowned. His team rescued about 10,000 animals from 53 different kinds!

In 1974, Pedro Trebbau helped create Venezuela's first modern zoo. It was called the Caricuao Zoo and opened in 1977. He was the president of this zoo for a few years. He also worked for the National Parks Institute, helping to protect natural areas.

Teaching About Animals

Pedro Trebbau loved to share his knowledge about animals. He believed it was important for everyone, especially young people, to learn about local wildlife. He hosted several TV shows that taught people about animals.

Some of his popular shows were Zoológico Infantil (Children's Zoo), La Fauna (The Wildlife), and Campamento en la Selva (Jungle Camp). These shows were on TV for many years and helped many kids learn about the amazing animals in Venezuela.

He wrote many scientific papers for other experts. But he was most proud of teaching regular people about animals. He always said that zoos were not just for fun. They were important places for learning and for doing research to help animals.

Pedro Trebbau worked with another scientist, Peter Pritchard, to write a very important book. This book, called The Turtles of Venezuela, is still a key guide for studying turtles in the country.

Pedro Trebbau passed away on 16 January 2021. He left behind a great legacy of protecting animals and teaching others to love nature.
