Pedro Benito Antonio Quevedo y Quintano was an important Spanish church leader and politician. He was born in Villanueva del Fresno in 1736 and passed away in Ourense in 1818. He played a big role in Spain during a difficult time, serving both the church and his country.

A Life of Service

Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano became a bishop in 1776. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church. He cared deeply about education. In 1803, he founded the Seminary of Ourense. This was a special school created to train young men to become priests.

Leading Spain in Crisis

Spain faced many challenges during Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano's life. One major event was the Peninsular War. During this war, the king of Spain, Ferdinand VII, was removed from power.

To help lead the country, a group called the Supreme Central Junta was formed. This group needed an executive body to make important decisions. Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano was one of only five people chosen for this special group, called the Council of Regency. This shows how much people trusted him to help govern Spain during a time of war.

The End of the Inquisition

At that time, Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano was also the last Grand Inquisitor. The Spanish Inquisition was a powerful church court that had existed for many years. However, in 1810, a new parliament called the Cortes of Cádiz was formed. This parliament decided to abolish, or get rid of, the Spanish Inquisition. Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano was the last person to hold that position before it ended.

Becoming a Cardinal

In 1816, Pope Pius VII, the head of the Catholic Church, recognized Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano's dedication and service. The Pope named him a cardinal. A cardinal is one of the highest ranks a person can achieve in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope himself.

His Legacy

Pedro de Quevedo y Quintano's life was dedicated to both his faith and his country. His sepulchre, which is a monument where someone is buried, can be found in the Ourense Cathedral. It was designed by a famous sculptor named Antoni Solà.
