Pedro de la Portilla facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pedro de la Portilla was a person from the 1700s who lived in a place called New Spain. New Spain is what Mexico was called a long time ago when it was ruled by Spain. Pedro de la Portilla was a Criollo, which means he was of Spanish family but was born in the Americas. He led a small rebellion against the Spanish rulers in 1799. This rebellion was called the Conspiracy of the Machetes. It didn't succeed, but it was still a big surprise for the Spanish leaders. Many people today see it as an early step towards Mexico's fight for independence.

Who Was Pedro de la Portilla?

Pedro de la Portilla was a leader who wanted to see changes in New Spain. He was a Criollo, meaning his family came from Spain, but he was born in the Americas. At that time, Criollos often felt they were treated unfairly by the Spanish government. Even though they were of Spanish descent, they didn't have as much power as people born in Spain. This made many Criollos unhappy and eager for more freedom.

What Was the Conspiracy of the Machetes?

The Conspiracy of the Machetes was a secret plan for a rebellion in 1799. Pedro de la Portilla was the main leader of this group. The plan was to rise up against the Spanish rulers in Mexico City. The rebels planned to use simple weapons like machetes, which are large knives often used for farming. This is why the rebellion got its name.

The group was not very large and their plan was discovered before it could really begin. The Spanish authorities quickly stopped the conspiracy. Even though it was a small group and they didn't have many powerful weapons, the Spanish rulers were still very worried. It showed them that some people in New Spain were ready to fight for their freedom.

Why Was This Rebellion Important?

Even though the Conspiracy of the Machetes failed, it is seen as a very important event in Mexican history. It happened only 11 years before the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores) in 1810. The Grito de Dolores was a famous call for independence that started the Mexican War of Independence.

Because Pedro de la Portilla's rebellion happened before the main war, it is considered a forerunner. This means it was an early sign or a first step towards the bigger fight for independence. It showed that the idea of breaking away from Spanish rule was growing stronger among the people of New Spain.
