Peebles, Wisconsin (pronounced Pēbles) is a small, unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city. It's located in the Town of Taycheedah in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
Peebles is very close to another community called Taycheedah. A major road, U.S. Route 151, goes right through Peebles. Another road, Wisconsin Highway 149, used to end here until 2006.
A Look Back: Peebles' History
This community got its name from a person named Ezra Peebles. He was the first owner of the land where Peebles now stands. In the past, people sometimes called the area Peebles Corners.
Life in 1880
Back in 1880, Peebles was a busy little place. It had several important buildings and services:
- A post office where people could send and receive mail.
- A tollgate, which was like a checkpoint where travelers paid a fee to use the road.
- A store for buying everyday goods.
- A cheese factory where local milk was turned into cheese.
- A railroad depot for the Sheboygan and Fond du Lac Railroad. This was a station where trains stopped, and people could get on or off, and goods could be loaded or unloaded.
