The Peggy Stewart House, also known as the Rutland-Jenifer-Stone House, is a beautiful old home in Annapolis, Maryland. It was built between 1761 and 1764. This house is famous for its classic Georgian architecture style.
Over the years, several important people owned this house. These included Thomas Stone and Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer. In 1774, it belonged to Anthony Stewart. He was the owner of a ship called the Peggy Stewart. The house is a National Historic Landmark because of its connection to these people and a famous event involving the ship. It also shows us what homes looked like in the 1700s.
What the Peggy Stewart House Looks Like
The Peggy Stewart House is a two-and-a-half story brick building. It sits on a raised basement. The main part of the house is about 50 feet (15 meters) wide and 30 feet (9 meters) deep. It has a classic Georgian design.
The sides of the house have small sections that stick out. These are topped with triangular shapes called pediments. The windows on the first floor and basement have curved tops. The second-floor windows have flat tops. The roof was changed in 1894 during a big renovation. A large brick section was also added to the back of the house at that time.
Inside, the house has a central hallway. A large living room is on one side of the hall. A dining room and another sitting room are on the other side. Upstairs, there are six bedrooms. Most of the original inside decorations have been changed. Only one bedroom still has its original woodwork. The house is near the United States Naval Academy and is still a private home today.
A Look at the House's History
The Peggy Stewart House was built for Thomas Rutland. He sold the house in 1772 to Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer. Jenifer was a very important person in Maryland. He was in charge of safety for Maryland in 1775. Later, he led the Maryland Senate.
Jenifer also served in the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1782. This was a group of leaders who helped create the United States. He was also a delegate to the Federal Convention in Philadelphia. This meeting helped write the U.S. Constitution.
In 1772, Jenifer sold the house to Anthony Stewart. Stewart was a merchant in Annapolis. He owned the ship Peggy Stewart. In 1774, citizens of Annapolis were very angry about a tax on tea. Anthony Stewart had paid this unpopular tea tax. The citizens forced him to burn his own ship, the Peggy Stewart.
After this event, Stewart left for Canada in 1774. His wife sold the house back to Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer in 1779. Jenifer then sold the house to Thomas Stone in 1783. Thomas Stone was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. When Stone passed away in 1787, Jenifer got the house back. He owned it until his own death in 1790.
