Pelham is a small community in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It is not an official town or city, but a group of homes and businesses. This area is sometimes called Sugar Tit. Pelham is located in the "Upstate" region of South Carolina. This means it is in the northwestern part of the state.
About Pelham
Pelham is found near the meeting point of two main roads, State 101 and State 296. It is southeast of a larger town called Greer. You can find it between the communities of Reidville and Five Forks. The area known as Sugar Tit stretches about five miles around a place called Joe's Lake.
For a long time, Pelham was mostly made up of farms and large land properties. But things started to change when the BMW car factory came to the area. After that, more neighborhoods and business parks were built. This brought new homes and jobs to Pelham.
The Story Behind "Sugar Tit"
The nickname "Sugar Tit" for Pelham has a funny story! Long ago, the men in the community would spend a lot of time chatting at the local general store. They would stay there for hours, just like a baby might stay attached to a "sugar tit."
A "sugar tit" was a homemade pacifier. It was a piece of cloth tied around a lump of sugar. Babies would suck on it to keep them quiet and happy. The wives of the men joked that their husbands loved the store as much as a baby loved its sugar tit. That's how the nickname stuck!
