The Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area is an exciting natural spot in North Dakota. It's part of the state's park system. You can find it along the Pembina River. This beautiful area is about 6 miles west of a town called Walhalla.
This recreation area is a great place for outdoor fun. You can go kayaking on the river. There are also many trails for different activities. These include hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. You can even use off-road vehicles on some trails.

The Pembina Gorge is a very special place for nature lovers. It has the largest number of rare plants and animals in all of North Dakota. This means it's super important for protecting these unique species.
Rare Species Found Here
Scientists have found 21 different kinds of rare animals in the gorge. They have also discovered 30 types of rare plants. Eight of these plant species grow nowhere else in North Dakota. This makes the gorge a one-of-a-kind habitat.
Plant Life in the Gorge
More than 480 types of vascular plants live in the Pembina Gorge. This is about one-third of all the plant species in North Dakota! In 2014, researchers counted 209 different kinds of flowering plants. This shows how rich and diverse the plant life is here.
