Pembroke Parish facts for kids
Pembroke Parish is one of the nine main areas, called parishes, in Bermuda. It is named after a famous English nobleman, William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, who lived a long time ago (from 1580 to 1630).
This parish is located on a small piece of land that sticks out from the middle of Bermuda's main island. It surrounds the city of Hamilton on three sides. The fourth side is next to Hamilton Harbour. Pembroke Parish looks a bit like the county of Pembrokeshire in Wales. This land also reaches into the eastern part of the Great Sound, which is a large body of water in western Bermuda. To the east, Pembroke Parish borders Devonshire Parish.
Like most parishes in Bermuda, Pembroke is about 2.3 square miles (which is about 6.0 square kilometers or 1500 acres) in size. In 2016, about 11,160 people lived here.
Some interesting natural spots in Pembroke include Spanish Point and Point Shares. There are also many small islands near Point Shares. Important buildings in Pembroke include Fort Hamilton and Government House.
A special area called Pembroke Marsh East was named a Ramsar site on May 11, 1999. A Ramsar site is a wetland that is important for nature and wildlife around the world.
