Penallt Old Church is a very old and special church found near the village of Penallt in Monmouthshire, Wales. It's considered a really important historical building, given a "Grade I listed" status on November 19, 1953. This means it's protected because of its unique history and beautiful design.
The Church's Story and Style
This church was built a very long time ago, either in the late 1200s or early 1300s. We don't know who it was first dedicated to. Most of the church was built during the Middle Ages, which was a period from about the 5th to the 15th century. However, the bottom part of its tower is even older.
The church also has a porch that was added later, in 1539. The building is made from a type of stone called Old Red Sandstone. Over the years, the church has been repaired and updated a few times, first between 1885 and 1887, and then again in 1951.
Inside the Church
When you step inside, you'll see a ceiling that looks like the inside of a barrel. This ceiling was built in the 1500s. There's also a row of arches, called an arcade, that divides the church into sections. These arches show a style of building called "Perpendicular," which was popular in England during the late Middle Ages.
One interesting feature inside is a fancy coat of arms for Queen Anne. This special decoration dates back to 1707. The church also has an altar table that was carved in 1916. It was made by a skilled carver who was a refugee from Belgium during World War I. People believed he was a master carver from a famous church called St. Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen.
Even today, church services are still held at Penallt Old Church on Sundays.
