The Pendle Heritage Centre is a special museum and visitor centre located in Barrowford, Lancashire, England. It teaches visitors all about the history and culture of the Pendle area. The centre is set inside an old farmhouse called Park Hill. This building has a stone with the year 1661 carved on it, but parts of it were built even earlier, starting in the 1500s.

The Heritage Centre also has a beautiful walled garden from the 1700s and a nice woodland path to explore. Inside, you can find the Pendle Arts Gallery, which shows local artwork.

Discovering Pendle Heritage Centre

The Pendle Heritage Centre was opened in 1977. It is one of the most important projects of the Heritage Trust for the North West. More than 100,000 people visit the centre every year to learn about the past.

Park Hill: A Historic Farmhouse

Park Hill is a very old farmhouse that has been carefully restored. Builders used traditional methods to fix it up. This helps visitors see how the house changed and grew from the 15th century onwards. It gives a great look into how people lived long ago.

Exhibitions and Stories

The museum has several permanent displays that you can explore.

  • One part tells the story of Park Hill as a working farm. You can learn about the daily life of farmers in the past.
  • Another exhibition shares the history of the Bannister and Swinglehurst families. These families once lived in the farmhouse.
  • There is also a section about the famous Pendle witches. These trials were a big event in the area's history. Sir Roger Bannister, a famous athlete, is a descendant of one of the families who lived here.

The Lancashire Witches Walk

To remember 400 years since the Pendle witch trials, a new long-distance walking path was created. It is called the Lancashire Witches Walk. Along this route, you will find ten special markers. These markers were designed by Stephen Raw. Each one has a verse from a poem by Carol Ann Duffy. The very first marker is located right here at the Pendle Heritage Centre. It marks the beginning of this historic walk.
