Peninsula Town Center is a large outdoor shopping and living area in Hampton, Virginia. It's a special kind of place called a mixed-use development. This means it has shops, restaurants, offices, and even apartments all in one spot!
This modern center was built on the same land where an older shopping mall, the Coliseum Mall, used to be. The Coliseum Mall was built in 1973. Peninsula Town Center is a huge project for Hampton, Virginia, making it a big part of the city's shopping and community life.
How it Started: The Coliseum Mall
The Coliseum Mall first opened its doors on October 31, 1973. It was a very important shopping spot in Hampton, Virginia, and the biggest one on the Virginia Peninsula for a while. When it first opened, it had three main department stores: E. J. Korvette, JCPenney, and Nachman's.
In 1976, the mall grew even bigger, adding more stores like Smith & Welton and Thalhimers. Later, one of these spots became a Children's Palace toy store.
Over the years, some of the original stores changed names or closed. For example, E. J. Korvette closed down, and Montgomery Ward took its place. Nachman's became Hess's, then Proffitt's, and finally Dillard's. Thalhimers changed to Hecht's and then to Macy's.
Changes and New Beginnings
By the early 2000s, the Coliseum Mall was getting older. Other new shopping areas had opened nearby, making it harder for the mall to keep up. Both of the Dillard's stores closed in 2003.
To make way for something new and modern, the Coliseum Mall officially closed for good on January 14, 2007. Soon after, it was torn down.
Peninsula Town Center Today
The land was then used to build the new Peninsula Town Center. This new outdoor center opened in 2009. It kept some of the popular stores from the old mall, like Macy's and JCPenney, and added new ones, including a Target store.
Peninsula Town Center is designed to be a lively place. Besides many different shops and restaurants, it also has office spaces and apartments built above some of the stores. There are also nice parks, open areas, and plenty of parking for visitors.
In 2016, the Macy's store at Peninsula Town Center closed as part of a plan to close several locations. However, the center continues to be a popular place for shopping, dining, and living in Hampton, Virginia.
