Penja pepper facts for kids
Penja pepper (also known as poivre de Penja) is a very special type of pepper. It grows in the Penja Valley in the country of Cameroon, which is in Africa. This pepper is unique because it grows in volcanic soil. This soil is full of minerals, which gives the pepper its distinct and delicious taste.
You can find Penja pepper in different colors: green, white, black, and red. Each color offers a slightly different flavor.
A Bit of History
Pepper farming started in Cameroon thanks to a man named Antoine Decré. He had a banana farm in the Penja area. The very first time Penja pepper was sent out of the country was in March 1958. It was a bag of 40 kilograms of white pepper.
Over time, this special pepper became very popular. Famous chefs, especially those with Michelin stars, loved to use it. Because it's so unique and high-quality, Penja pepper can be quite expensive.
Why Penja Pepper is Protected
Penja pepper is not just any pepper; it has a special status. It is protected as a "geographical indication." This means that only pepper grown in the Penja Valley can be called "poivre de Penja." It's like how only sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France can be called "Champagne."
This protection helps make sure the pepper's quality and origin are known. It also helps the farmers in Penja Valley. This protection is recognized in 17 African countries and also in the European Union and Northern Ireland.
